In simpler terms, if I have to define this TVB Hong Kong Drama, I’d say that it is the light-hearted version of ‘Beyond the Realm of Conscience’. It emphasizes comedy to connect with its audience. But rest assured, it will definitely rile up complex emotions in you, as you go on watching.

It is a story deep-rooted in martial arts and ancient Chinese culture. It has good action and storyline but nothing is too overboard. Though I’ll suggest you watch this TVB drama with fewer expectations. If you are looking for back-to-back action scenes then this show is not for you.

Chu Kot Ching Ngo is the head of the Sheriff Bureau in the Sung Dynasty. He brought together three men, special in their own way, and formed ‘The Four’ and together they solve many cases. But some people in the empire want to break this group to hurt the emperor.

Witness Insecurity is a decent TVB drama that is a mixture of family drama and police drama. It would have been better if they’d focused on the police part more. There’s nothing really special about the drama, it is good for pass time.

Hui Wai Kit is a police officer ordered to protect the daughter of a wealthy businessman, Kui Chi Lam. Lam was a reserved woman but after meeting Kit she starts to open up and falls in love with him.

  • Year: 1984
  • Genre: Historical, Comedy
  • Cast: Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Carina Lau, Kiki Sheung

Based on a historical novel by Jin Yong, “The Duke of Mount Deer” has been adapted as a tv drama many times. The most recent being the 2020 Chinese adaptation. However, I believe that age truly doesn’t matter and 1984’s TVB version of The Duke of Mound Deer is still the best adaptation of this novel ever made.

Wei Siu Bo is a spoiled brat having no direction in life. His favorite pass time is roaming around his mother’s brothel. One day he is brought to the palace by a blind eunuch where the emperor is impressed by his witty sense of humor. The young emperor offers him a position in Grand Eunuchs.

Even so, he becomes friends with the emperor, his goofy nature makes him a disciple of the rebel clan leader. This double-dealing setting creates hilarious chaos throughout the show as Wei Sui Bo tries to stay loyal to both his leaders.

Another top-class depiction of the vernacular Chinese novel is this HK drama from TVB that aired during mid-2001.

I know this is 2021, and you might question why I am talking about old classics back to back. As I said earlier, this is a list of the best TVB dramas, and these classics are Asian drama masterpieces. Watch it to believe it.

Popular:  Kim So Hye and Lee Sang Yeob To Star in Gripping Boxing Drama "My Lovely Boxer"

King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty was one of the cruelest and oppressive rulers who ruled over China. His ruthless control over the empire made King Wu of the Zhou Dynasty take charge of the situation and rebel against him.

In no time, China is in absolute chaos, families shattered, the kingdom is disordered, and many innocent soldiers killed for their loyalty.

17. Legal Mavericks | 踩過界II

  • Logline: A horrible accident that took away his sight but couldn’t stop Vincent from practicing law and developing an acute form of sense that gave him the status of Blind Legal Knight.
  • Year: 2016-2020
  • Genre: Courtroom
  • Cast: Vinvent Wong, Owen Cheung, Sisley Choi, Kelly Cheung

Having watched many popular courtroom drama movies, and legal tv shows, it was hard for me to ignore Legal mavericks. This was my first legal genre of HK drama and in no time I got hooked on the story.

Calling it just a courtroom drama would not be fair. It’s a mixed genre show with enough moments of comedy, suspense, and sometimes even romance.

Law is Blind. If you haven’t already understood this statement, you must see this drama. The story revolves around Vincent Wong, a blind barrister who has developed amazing senses that are beyond normal sight.

Vincent’s team includes paralegal Sisley Choi and private detective Owen Cheung. Knows as “Three Sword Fighters” they are on a mission to help the needy claim justice in the court even if it meant crossing the lines.

18. Virtues of Harmony | 皆大歡喜

  • Logline: A comedy-drama following the chronicles of the Kam Family.
  • Year: 2001
  • Genre: Historical, Comedy
  • Cast: Michael Tse, Frankie Lam, Bernice Liu, Nancy Sit

Another iconic TVB Jade Drama which can’t be left out is Virtues of Harmony. An exceptional representation of Chinese culture supported by a strong plot led this drama to become one of the most popular Hong Kong sitcoms. Originally aired in 2001, the drama was reaired by TVB in 2018 due to its high popularity.

The series follows the chronicles of the wealthy Kam family. Yau Nim Chi heads the Kam family. She is a single mother of 3 triplets who strictly follow every word she says.

The family owns a restaurant in the town square and is famous for its noodles. The show is an account of back-to-back tragedies that keeps happening with the family members.

19. Triumph in the Skies | 衝上雲霄

  • Logline: Story of unbalanced life of solar aviation staff.
  • Year: 2003
  • Genre: Drama
  • Cast: Francis Ng, Flora Chan, Joe ma, Myolie Wu

It surprises me to see how Hong Kong dramas were functioning way ahead of their time. While other Asian dramas are still figuring their way out of historical novels and high school stories, TVB had come up with this non-generic, realistic-looking story in 2003. No doubt it was the best TVB drama of the 2000s.

The story sets up in a fictional Aviation company called Solar Aviation. Samuel Tong and Vincent Ling are two childhood friends who work as a pilot in Solar Aviation.

At one point in their career, they get indulged in a love triangle with an air hostess named Belle. Soon after Vincent weds Belle, love dreams of Samuel come to an end. The show then goes into narrating incidents from the lives of Belle and Vincent.

20. Lives of Omission

  • Logline: A story of a badass police officer.
  • Year: 2011
  • Genre: Crime
  • Cast: Michael Tse, Bosco Wong, Fala Chen, Kate Tsui

In the genera of action thriller, the hong kong anime has made a significant contribution. Adding to the same, this anime is a spin-off of the highly distinguished crime drama series E.U. Not only it was one of the top-rated drama series of TVB in the year 2011 but also won the best drama at the TVB awards during the same year.

As I already mentioned the series is a spin-off of the crime drama E.U, the narrative begins with the biggest plot buster where the officer who supposedly died in the E.U is found to be alive and uses his death to solve an important mission in China. Later on, he again became a part of Hong Kong’s CIB where he started training recruits.

He was well known for his rebellious nature and many of the officers disliked him for not playing by rules.
