You know an anime is gonna be filled with overpowered characters when you have literal Gods in it. Though not the case with every God anime, still, there are rarely any animes with God characters that I disliked. 

Countless animes have featured divine beings in their story, but not all of them had Gods as their MC. So in this post, I decided to include popular anime where God is the main character or plays a very crucial role in the story.

20. Oh! My Goddess

There are three realms; heaven ( Valhalla ), hell ( Niflheim), and Earth. Gods rule ValhallaNiflheim is the world of beasts and demons, and humans have Earth. The Reality is managed by Yggdrasil; a complex computer.

Just like the earth, in the realm of Valhalla and Niflheim, all gods and demons have class, category, and limitations to use their power. And Yggdrasil keeps an eye on everyone and maintains the law.

Oh! My Goddess is the story of a human, Keiichi Morisato and the goddess, Belldandy who stay together through all thick and thin and stand against the laws of Yggdrasil.

19. Inari Kon Kon

Inari is a shy and clumsy school girl with a kind heart. One day she saves an animal from drowning in the river. The deity gets happy by her act of kindness in this selfish world.

So she grants Inari a wish and also gives her the ability to transform into anyone she wants. But this gets the unwanted attention of otherworldly beings on Inari and now she has to deal with it.

But he has one problem that he is overly cautious of everything. This behavior of Seiya starts to piss the goddess off but she needs him in her mission to save Gaeabrande.

This anime follows the story of a shy schoolgirl, Yurie. Her life tumbles upside down when she and people around her realize that she possesses Godlike abilities. 

After discovering her powers, her friends gave her the nickname Kamichu. Kamichi is made up of two words: Kami means God and Chūgakusei meaning middle school girl.

At first, she is pretty naive with her recognition and powers. Soon she realizes the potential of her powers. She meets with new Deities/Gods in her path to become a better version of herself and a goddess.

The story reloves around the Shimabara sisters Manami, Ushio, and Yuuhi. They live on their own in a rented apartment and constantly find new leads on their missing brother. The eldest sister is the producer and a baker as well.

One day a young man arrives from the Pacific island of Barou with news that her brother is dead. The brother had married the Barou royalty and bestowed the hereditary of Barou upon the sisters. The land of Barou has a god named Neo Ranga, which they later discovered that God is a gigantic monster.

The story is nothing out of the world but the action is great as you get to watch little kid Gods fighting massive monsters with ease and sometimes with great effort.

In a battle between gods and demons that happened 800 years ago, the gods sealed away the demons using themselves as the barrier.

Eight centuries have passed since the great war and the new gods have seen nothing but peace in that time. They have no experience of fighting and their peaceful lives are about to change as demons have started reviving and a fresh war is on the corner.

12. Campione

  • Logline: After accidentally killing God of War, Godou inherits his powers and becomes a Campione.

Goudo is a young boy who accidentally kills the God of War and inherits his power, thus becoming a God Slayer aka Campione. This brings a lot of unwanted attention towards him from other Gods and Campiones. On top of that, many beautiful followers are flocking towards him, enchanted by his newly attained Godly aura. 

11. Nekogami Yaoyorozu

  • Logline: Cat God Mayu gets banned from heaven because of illegal gambling and is forced to live on earth.

Once the evil forces learn about this ring and its powers, they start to chase Karin. As a response, Karin starts to fight back these sinister while knowing more and more about her newly found powers.

Nanami Momozono is a teenage girl with a sad life. Her father gambled all their money and now she is on the streets alone looking for a shelter. Nanami saves a strange man who was being chased by a dog. Nanami told that man about her poor condition and that she was homeless.

The man offers her his place to stay as a token of gratitude. Nanami later gets to know that it was not a home but a shrine and that man is none other than the god of earth and he has chosen Nanami as his successor. 

8. Danmachi 

  • Logline: Adventures life of a young hero and his Goddess.

In the world of Danmachi, diety or gods have started living in the human world. They all have limited their magical powers as they wanted to know the hardships of the human world. The deities have formed familias in which they take mortals and the mortals serve them. 

Bell Cranel is the only member of the Hestia familia under the goddess Hestia. Bell aims to be the best Adventurer and Hestia supports him all the way.

7. Kamisama Kazouku

  • Logline: Samatarou is a son of a God who lives in the human world with his parent to become a better God himself.
  • Year: 2008

A story of a god learning the human ways is definitely an interesting premise and it is executed beautifully. From story to character development, everything is worth appreciating.

Samatarou seems like an average high school boy living an ordinary life but this is not the case. Samatarou is a son of God and his mother is a goddess.

The whole family lives in the human world so that Samatarou can understand humans better and become a good God himself. But his life’s about to change when a girl enters his life and he falls in love with her.

6. Record of Ragnarok

  • Logline: Fate of Humanity lies in the hand of 13 warriors who have to fight and win against gods.

Valkyrie Brunhilde gave a proposal to give humanity one last chance to prove its worth. They all came to an agreement that a battle would be held between the gods and humans. This battle will be called the battle of Ragnarok.

5. Noragami

  • Logline: A story of a God who can do anything for 5 yen.

That’s the dream of our MC too, he is a God but the problem is he is poor with no followers. Definitely worth your time.

Yato is a minor God who grants wishes for 5 yen. It’s his way to make a name for himself. His deep desire is to have a shrine of himself and many worshippers. 

He along with his familiar and human girl fights evil monsters lurking around in the world. Together they embark on various adventures, some funny and some very serious.

4. Spice And Wolf

  • Logline: An amazing romantic story of a traveling merchant and the Goddess of Harvest.

She meets Kraft Lawrence, a 25 years old traveling merchant who trades goods to meet his daily needs. His main goal is to start his shop. Holo somehow manages at convincing Lawrence to take her with him and the sweet adventure begins.

  • Logline: Lord of mischief Loki is banned from his world by Greek God Odin. Now the lord of thunder ( Loki’s brother) is helping him regain his lost pride.

The story starts off from a Greek legend where God Odin bans the God of mischief Loki. As punishment for Loki’s sins, he is exiled on earth and is forced to take the form of a human child. His only way to return to Heaven is to collect evil characters that have taken over human hearts.

So he started a detective company that investigates paranormal activities and supernatural beings. During his journey, he befriends many characters, and many of them want to annihilate him.

2. Good Luck Girl

  • Logline: A romantic story of a girl blessed with amazing luck and the God of misfortune.

The anime takes a dig at all the simp protagonists of other animes with an MC who is very open about his desires and doesn’t shy away from all the attention he gets. Plus it’s funny to see the main Goddess in this anime is a total nut job.

Synopsis

Kazuma Satō dies and gets transported to a fantasy world. He meets the Goddess of Water, Aqua, and asks her to join him in this new adventure, hoping that keeping a Goddess around would help him out.

But to his surprise, Aqua is useless in the human world and becomes a burden on Kazuma. Together they try hard to survive in a world filled with demons and magic.
