highlights of best vampire anime shows

You might have heard countless stories surrounding different supernatural beings, but the thrill that one gets from a vampire story is unparalleled. And if that Vampire story is made in Anime, one can imagine how wild things can get.

There are probably thousands of animes that have a Vampire character in some way or another. But my objective is to bring forth stories that heavily revolve around Vampire plotlines.

So in this post, I’ll be sharing with you my list of Top 10 Best Vampire Animes that made me fall in love with Vampires and the supernatural genre in general.

1. Hellsing

  • Logline: Hellsing is an organization that deals with supernatural threats and are tasked to eliminate a Vampire who’s creating chaos in the world.
  • Year: 2001
  • Anime Vibe: Action, Horror
  • Studio: Gonzo

Hellsing is that OG Vampire anime that all other Vampire animes look up to. It has got everything to get you hooked: a fun story, impactful characters, ruthless brutality, a nice pinch of humor, and mesmerizing art.

The story revolves around Hellsing, an organization that deals with supernatural threats. It is asked to eliminate a vampire that is turning the people of a village into ghouls. They dispatch their ace agent, Alucard, who is also a vampire. During the mission, he comes across a mortally wounded girl named Seras Victoria

He feels pity for her and offers her to become a Vampire, to which she agrees. Seras begins her new life as a member of Hellsing and along with Alucard, gets on the trail to hunt the vicious vampire.

2. Bakemonogatari

  • Logline: The side effects of a supernatural healing procedure turn Koyomi Araragi’s life upside down.
  • Year: 2009
  • Anime Vibe: Romance
  • Studio: Shaft

Bakemonogatari is one of the few anime masterpieces that transcend the vampire and horror genre to become something special.

The show follows the chilling story of Koyomi Araragi, a third-year school student. Koyomi Araragi is saved from a vampire attack by a strange man called Meme Oshimo. The supernatural healing left Koyomi with some uncommon abilities.

With his newfound power, Araragi attempts to help those who suffer from supernatural maladies. Bakemonogatari, without a doubt, is one of the best anime on this list.

3. Shiki

  • Logline: A quiet village is turned into a pit of chaos when strange people arrive to live there.
  • Year: 2010
  • Anime Vibe: Horror, Thriller
  • Studio: Daume
Popular:  Rurouni Kenshin Episode 4: Kenshin vs Sanosuke Sagara

Shiki is not an average Vampire anime that just revolves around good-vs-bad. It makes you think about who is actually good or evil here and does not being a human automatically makes you bad.

Sotoba is a very quiet village where nothing ever happens. But that all changes when strange people arrive and start living there. Megumi, who’s fascinated by the new neighbors decides to pay them a visit.

However, Megumi doesn’t return home that night and the next day she’s found weak and anemic, with strange bite marks on her. Soon after unusual things start happening in the village, causing Toshio Ozaki, the village doctor to investigate the matter before it’s too late.

4. Black Blood Brothers

  • Logline: Katorau is abducted by the Kowloon Children and his brother who once defeated the Kowloon has no choice but to fight them again.
  • Year: 2006
  • Anime Vibe: Action, Comedy
  • Studio: Group TAC

Transcribed from a Japanese novel, Black Blood Brothers is a Japanese anime that made its place on the list because of its intriguing storyline. A suspenseful plot followed by a thrilling history that will keep you occupied through its 12 episodes.

Mochizuki Jirou is a lone hero who once single-handedly defeated the Kowloon children. Now the Kowloon’s are on their way to infiltrate the “Special Zone” to take revenge from Jirou.

The cartoonish animation does feel a bit choppy for a dark vampire anime like this. Overall it’s a nicely polished well-packed series and shall prove to be a perfect time killer.

5. Owari no Seraph

  • Logline: Trapped in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by Vampires, a young man strives hard to find retribution.
  • Year: 2015

The world is grasped by a mysterious virus that kills anyone over 13 years of age. It gave the previously hidden, power-hungry vampires a chance to take over the world. Now under the rule of these vampires, humanity is nothing more than livestock.

Among the survivors are Yuuichirou and Mikaela Hyakuya, two young boys who hate being a captive. So they decide to run, but the plan fails and only Yuuichirou survives.

Blood lad emits a new perspective into the vampire anime genre. Instead of ruling over the human realm, a vampire actually wants to help a human get back to life. An interesting series that deserves your time and a position in the top 10 list of best vampire anime.

Two friends, Yuuki Cross, and Zero Kiryuu are responsible for upholding smooth switch of day and night classes in the Cross Academy. A dull-looking job at the surface hides the reality of vampires attending the night school.

Yuuki Cross’s earliest memories recall from 10 years ago. The time when she was saved by pureblood vampire Kaname Kuran while she was attacked by a vampire in a chilling stormy night. Now years later she gets a chance to see Kaname Kuran again as he leads the vampire elite class. On the contrary Zero Kiryuu hates vampires and considers them as distrustful beings.

The race of vampires, Methuselah, are affiliated with the New Human Empire; whereas the humans, deemed Terrans by the vampires, make up the Vatican Papal State.

Vatican Papal state allocates AX unit led by Cardinal Caterina Sforza to take control over vampire led disturbances. The show then follow these AX Agents as they go on many spine-chilling missions.

This list would have been incomplete if there were no Vampire-Warewolf anime in it. But it’s not a typical Vampire-vs-Warewolf kind of a story. On the contrary, it focuses on the chemistry between the two.

Mina Tepes is the queen of all vampires and she wishes to coexists with humans. She builds a sanctuary in Japan for vampires, called the Vampire Bund. But humans don’t see Mina’s quest for peace as a nice gesture but a facade.
