During Crunchyroll’s panel at Anime Expo, it was announced that a new television anime adaptation of Yana Toboso’s Black Butler manga is in production. Crunchyroll clarified that this upcoming anime season is not a remake but a continuation of the series. The new season is scheduled to premiere in 2024, and Crunchyroll has obtained the global streaming rights for the anime, excluding Japan.
©Yana Toboso/SQUARE ENIX, Project Black Butler Daisuke Ono and Maaya Sakamoto will reprise their roles as Sebastian Michaelis, the butler, and Ciel Phantomhive, the British noble, respectively.
Kenjirō Okada (known for works such as March comes in like a lion and RWBY: Ice Queendom) will direct the anime at CloverWorks. Hiroyuki Yoshino, who has previously worked on scripts for the Black Butler anime series, will be in charge of series composition for the new season. Yumi Shimizu, who served as an episode animation director and key animator in the 2008 Black Butler anime, will handle character design. Ryo Kawasaki (known for composing music for Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia, To Your Eternity, Romantic Killer) will be responsible for the music in the new season.
Black Butler is an adaptation of Yana Toboso’s manga of the same name. The original anime series premiered in Japan in 2008, followed by Black Butler II in 2010. Funimation has released all three television anime seasons, the Black Butler II OVA project, the Black Butler: Book of Murder OVA, and the Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic anime film on home video.
